Shihtzus originated in Tibet. How long ago is anybody's guess. As long as people have had the ability to record history, there have been Shihtzus. They were a closely guarded secret of China until the early 19th century when the empress of China sent a pair to England as a gift. The empress herself had over 140 Shihtzus. The name is said to mean either (lion dog) or (chrysanthemum faced dog) depending on your source.
They have always been bred as companion animals and by nature just want to sit on your lap or beside you. Wherever you are that is where they want to be. They are the most loving and affectionate animals I have ever seen. Their loving and affectionate nature is the reason I started breeding these wonderful dogs. Almost human, they sometimes mumble in a low voice as if they are trying to speak to you.
Shihtzus and children are a match made in heaven. There are few breeds, especially toys who have the affinity for children that Shihtzus have. they just seem to naturally understand each other. They become inseparable, Shihtzus think everything children do is a game. With proper supervision, a shihtzu pup can teach your child about responsibility.
Shihtzu are double coated, but have hair like a person that needs care like yours does. They do not shed. Their coats can be long or cut short, the longer the hair, the more grooming is required. The dog is really cute in a short cut and easier to maintain. I keep mine in short cuts. Because of their larger eyes, care must be taken to keep them free from soap when bathing, you must trim the hair around eyes so the hair won't to into their eyes and cause irrritation.
