YORKIE FACTS

YORKSHIRE TERRIERS are very energetic, as they are a true terrier. The breed standard is between 3 to 7 lbs. Yorkies are a single coated dog and do not have an undercoat like most dogs. They do not shed, but they should be brushed two or three times a week, also need regular grooming, but can be kept in a short cut (puppy or Miami style. I myself keep most of mine in short coats as it is easier to maintain.

Yorkie puppies are very small and I sometimes have to keep them a little longer until they can go home. Making sure they are eating properly. The tinier they are the more you have to make sure they eat enough. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW IS THAT THEY EAT THROUGH OUT THE WHOLE DAY food should be provided at ALL times.

Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. This is a very serious concern for small breeds like Yorkies, particularly when they first go to their new home.Stress from leaving their siblings and mother plus going to a new place, may cause them not to eat properly. Low blood sugar may put them in a coma very quickly. They can get very lethargic, and need immediate attention. You need to give then a little honey or kayo syrup or pancake syrup immediately following it up with some food, even if you have to force it down their throat. A tub of Nutristat or Nutrical is good to have on hand to supplement 3 times a day for puppies having problems eating You must make sure they eat because DEATH can occur in the event that they do not eat. Vets even have problems bringing them around at this point. so MAKE SURE THEY EAT

Breeding, If you think you might like to breed your Yorkie, think long and hard about it, as Yorkies are one of the most difficult to breed. Their size makes whelping puppies difficult and they almost always need help. Odds are the first puppy will be breech (butt first) and the largest one. Losing puppies  is very heartbreaking. Check with your vet. to be sure your female is big enough to be breed. I never breed females under 3lbs , and the male should always be smaller than your female to help prevent cesareans.

Yorkies and small children are not a very good idea, if the child is under 7. Yorkies have been severely injured because a child has left them on a sofa or chair or bed. The Yorkie will try to jump down but it is too high and they may break a leg. So this can not be fair to the child or the Yorkie, not making this the perfect playmate you may have thought . Make  sure your child is old enough to have a Yorkie. You know if they are capable. It is important that Yorkies are keep indoors. They do not do well in extreme heat or cold If it comfortable for you then it will be for them.

Housebreaking your Yorkie, like most terriers they have a a mind of their own and  it takes patience and loving understanding to train them They do well with pee pads. I find the best way  is to place them in a playpen or in a room with  a child gate. Put toys as well as a bed or blanket, training pad, and always food and water. They do not do very well in kennels, so only use for short times if need be, Yorkies are precious creatures, will live a along life if taken proper care of.Being informed is part of that.
